The Lone Ranger (2013)

loneranger2loneranger

Disney western
-Year: 2013
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: boys ~5-9
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: very low
-Rating: 2/10 ?
-Rating: **
-Comment: I think some few and very young kids only. Maybe I missed some supporting actors but I doubt of much better scenes.

A boy (Bryant Prince as Danny) in very dark brown greyish clothes and a flat hat (dark red shirt) with long dark blond hair and some boys in a train. Pic 1 at 16 minutes. Pic 2 taken from the trailer.

I think I have checked most of the movie but couldn’t find better scenes.

The latest and one of the few real Disney westerns. Starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, nominated for 2 Oscars.

Rating 1-2 only. I also don’t like the movie itself. Set in 1868 and 1933. The early, family orientated Disney classics of the 1950s-70s are much better (more movies coming soon).

Please also note my entry “Hound-Dog Man” on my overalls blog (rating 4).

Der lange Ritt zur Schule

langerittzurschule

DEFA family film
-Year: 1982
-Country: East Germany
-Who in clothing: Alex 10
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium
-Rating: 5/10
-Rating: *****
-Comment: Frank Träger in good cowboy clothes including beige chaps, light blue jeans pants and vest and a flat Zorro like hat. Also riding (on own horse as well as together with Gojko Mitic). Also a girl in beige bib overalls (soon on my overalls blog) and cowboy men with chaps. Many other kids at school but not in western clothes. There are scenes in modern setting (like riding in the streets) as well as real western setting like in a saloon. (Day-dreaming)

English title “The Long Ride to School”. Novel by Gerhard Holtz-Baumert.

I found it during research for my Lederhosen blog but heard of it earlier before having this blog. I haven’t seen this complete movie yet. Available as single DVD or on an Icestorm version with another movie.

Looks quite interesting but I think rather few good scenes (?)

Also starring Gojko Mitic who did lots of East German westerns. I wonder why there were westerns allowed in East Germany.

I don’t know how many western scenes there are in here and although I don’t like much East German westerns and East German movies (except for handsome actors or Lederhosen scenes) this one might be one of the few or even the only East German western featuring a kid (even an older blond boy and even with chaps). I have to check it out and hope for a soon broadcasting.

Rating 5-6 for now.

Update: I now have seen the 2nd half of the movie. A bit disappointing. The boy isn’t very handsome as first assumed. The jeans have a black seat pad or patch between the legs. However good plot and quite good and funny western scenes.

I think I can still give rating 5 for this rare movie.

Old Yeller

oldyelleroldyeller2

Disney film
-Year: 1957
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Arliss ~7, Travis 15
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no, TV recording ?
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating: 6/10 ?
-Rating: ******
-Comment: Kevin Corcoran (as 5 yo Arliss, pic 1, also in Wagon Train) and Tommy Kirk (as 14 yo Travis, also 1956 in Gunsmoke)  in different shirts. Both wearing light brown pants, Kirk a medium brown vest and a medium blue shirt in another scene. Not sure about riding scenes with the kids (Arliss riding the dog).

I’m sure that I have seen this movie but many years ago and so it needs to be rechecked as well.

Obviously a typical 50s Disney movie with animals (here a dog). Based on the 1956 novel by Fred Gipson. Also starring Fess Parker.

Arliss is very young here. Rather an adventure and ranch movie than a western. Some book editions also showing a boy in blue bib overalls but I haven’t found the word in the novel.

Rating 6-7 for now (for Travis).

I also have updated the stats pic and will make one about my favourite westerns (so far) soon.

The Long Ride Home (2003)

longridehome2003

Western starring Randy Travis
-Year: 2003
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Daniel ~12
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating: 4/10 ?
-Rating: ****
-Comment: Alec Medlock medium blond in a black shirt and light brown pants with typical suspenders. Also wearing a large beige hat. Nice farm work (unfortunately no bib overalls). Scene at 11 minutes.

I found this by coincidence some time ago, I think a YouTube recommendation.

I haven’t seen the complete movie at slow speed, so I have to recheck it later the next airing.

Rated PG 13, 1.85:1 , also starring Eric Roberts, Ernest Borgnine and others.

Rating 4-5 for now. Maybe much higher. Sorry I can’t say much more yet.

The Apple Dumpling Gang

Disney western
-Year: 1975
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Bobby, Clovis, Celia
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating: 5/10 ?
-Rating: *****
-Comment: ~13 yo Clay O’Brien (“Gunsmoke”, The Cowboys (1972), LHOTP and some other westerns)  as Bobby, ~9 yo Brad Savage as Clovis in typical pants with wide suspenders. Also in suit jackets and black string ties.  And little Stacy Manning as Celia in a dress and a straw hat. And a woman (their mother ?) wearing a cowboy hat.

One of the few Disney westerns and my 2nd one (the others coming soon). Also it’s another girl entry (some women entries also coming soon).

Probably I have seen this movie long time ago but can’t remember it and only checked some few parts of it.

More a family and comedy film but real western time setting. There is also a 1979 sequel but not with this kids. Movie was also aired later as series on Disney-Land.

I have to recheck it the next broadcasting more carefully.

Rating 5-6 for now. Clay O’ Brien in Gunsmoke (1972 episode) wearing bib overalls shirtless is much better (rating 9 on my overalls blog). I also have LHOTP and The Cowboys on my other blog.

Gun Duel in Durango

gunduelindurango

Western starring George Montgomery
-Year: 1957
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Robbie 12
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: b&w
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating: 5/10
-Rating: *****
-Comment: 12 yo Bobby Clark as 10 yo Robbie in a beige or white striped shirt and medium brown (cord ?) pants with a belt. Also sitting on a wagon. Scene at 26 minutes.

Looks very interesting but I haven’t seen the movie yet. Obviously a typical good western and a handsome boy. 73 minutes. Fullscreen. Directed by Sidney Salkow.

Rating 5-6 for now.

The Winds of Autumn

windsofautumn2windsofautumn

Western starring Jack Elam
-Year: 1976
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Joel ~13
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium
-Rating: 5/10 ?
-Rating: *****
-Comment: Blond Chuck Pierce Jr. (son of the director, who also starred) as 11 yo orphaned Quaker boy Joel. Interesting hat and haircut, so I had to upload both pics. Typical pants (but dartk brown or black) with suspenders, and black boots.

Scenes at 7 and 14 minutes.

Looks quite interesting but I only have checked it briefly.

I think several scenes with him but somehow I think that there are better movies.

Most scenes are close-up views (headshots), some scenes are dark or in the snow and he sometimes wears a jacket.

So just rating 5-6 for now. Although quite handsome I don’t like his haircut and the clothes are nothing special either. Few good (dramatic) scenes.

Alien Thunder

alienthunderalienthunder2

Western starring Donald Sutherland
-Year: 1974
-Country: Canada
-Who in clothing: boys ~8
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating: 4/10
-Rating: ****
-Comment: One boy in different interesting clothes. Is this James O’Shea? Shorter grey pants and long black stockings and also a brief scene at a burial in a sailor suit (rating 3). Also a very good bedroom scene (soon on my bedroom blog, rating 5).

Aka Dan Candy’s Law. Based upon a true story. Also available on archive.org (I wonder why) but not in widesceen.

But I think I somehow don’t like this movie itself. And I think rather few good scenes of the boy.

Rating 3-4. (But 4 due to the interesting clothes).

Father Murphy

fathermurphyfathermurphy2

LHOTP spin-off. 35 episodes in 2 seasons
-Year: 1981-1983
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: boys ~6-13
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: often
-Rating: 7/10 ?
-Rating: *******
-Comment: Several boys and teen boys in different clothes including typical brown pants with wide suspenders but also even (jeans) bib overalls (also on my overalls blog rating 6, and my bedroom blog, rating 6 including bunk beds). Also other clothes like suit pants, nightwear and shirtless scenes. Different haircuts are also of interest.

I haven’t checked all episodes and the original LHOTP is more famous and much better.

On pic 1 the school is inside the saloon showing several kids including girls.

Many supporting actress including Corey Feldman, Christina Applegate, Tracey Gold and others.

Rating 5-6. Not a real western series.

Update: I have checked some more episodes. Now rating 7 instead of 5. Also boys riding.

Screen Directors Playhouse: The Brush Roper

brushroperbrushroper2

Drama starring Walter Brennan
-Year: 1955
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Cowhide ~12
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: b&w
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium
-Rating: 7/10 ?
-Rating: *******
-Comment: Lee Aaker (Rin Tin Tin, Hondo (1953), rating 8)  in tight jeans. Also riding wearing a cowboy hat. Also good farm scenes. What else could someone want?

But rather short, 25 minutes is this episode s1e8 (on YouTube). Produced on Hal Roach Studios.

I have to check the other episodes and more movies starring Lee Aaker.

I think not (officially) on DVD and probably not a real western.

Rating 7.
