Cattle Drive (1951)

cattledrive1951cattledrive1951b

Western starring Joel McCrea
-Year: 1951
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Chester Jr. 13
-Available on DVD: yes *
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: always
-Rating: 7/10 –
-Rating: *******
-Comment: At the beginning 13 or 14 yo Dean Stockwell in a black suit, black vest and grey pants (pic 3), also one other boy in a train (11 yo Timmy Hawkins ?). In the 2nd half of the movie Dean wears beige pants and a light brown shirt. Also riding. But at least one scene dark lit.

I haven’t checked the complete movie and I don’t like curly hair, but some scenes are very good (see pics, standing and sitting on the horse).

There is a DVD available but I think a mod so quite rare and expensive, especially outside the US. Not sure if I would buy it otherwise. I hope for a soon broadcasting instead.

Stockwell made lots of movies. Some westerns. (Stars in My Crown (1950), b&w, overalls blog rating 6, The Mighty McGurk (sailor suit blog, rating 6), some westerns like series Wagon Train but as an adult.

For now rating 7.

Update: now completetly seen. More scenes than thought. Even blue jeans at the end. But rather few good scenes. Rating maybe lower.

Die Abenteuer des Huck Finn

abenteuerdeshuckfinnabenteuerdeshuckfinn2

Adventure film
-Year: 2012
-Country: Germany
-Who in clothing: Huck ~15, Tom ~14, woman
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: yes, TV recording
-Clothing occurence: often
-Rating: 4/10
-Rating: ****
-Comment: Leon Seidel as Huck (pic 1, pic 2 on right and pic 3 on right). Also some few scenes of Louis Hofmann as Tom Sawyer (pic 2 on left) and a woman (Rosalie Thomass as Judith Loftus, pic 3). Also at least one young girl and maybe some other supporting actors, but nothing much of interest. Pic 1 is from the end in his usual clothes and hat. Pic 1 from the beginning in fine clothes and a string tie leaving widow Douglas’ house. Pic 3 the famous scene where he had to dress like a girl. Also some shirtless scenes but nothing much more.

Had been aired yesterday. I don’t like this modern family version and sequel to Tom Sawyer (2012), also see my bedroom blog, rating 2 for that, along many other versions.

This movie is a bit better than the prequel. Both boys are handsome. Huck looks much younger than 15 and younger like in other Tom + Huck movies and a bit small and chubby (what isn’t bad). So besides the boys, the movies are very poor and maybe the worst. At least kids of today learn about this matter and visit the cinema with their parents and grandparents.

This movie is very western-like (but few scenes). It starts with Pap Finn in a western town and even has a saloon and women wearing cowboy hats. Quite unusual and I think I have seen most of Tom+Huck movies (checking for bedrooms and overalls scenes), I think there are some more to be checked.

But there are much better versions. I prefer the classics and US or Canadian actors like Ian Tracey in the 1979 version or Patrick Day in the 1986 version, and of course overalls.

Actor rating: 6. Western setting: 3-4. Movie (2-)3.

Tom Sawyer (2012) had been aired one day later. Much more kid actors and more famous plot. Very similar but less western-like. And Tom+Huck are even younger.

List 3: My favourite westerns and ranch movies

mytop10westerns

Now I have enough entries to make a list of my favourite movies (like on my other blogs). The pic is also added on the right coloumn below the TOP5 (which has also been updated).

I just have 2 rating 10 entries, one rating 9, the rest rating 8 and 7. So I hope to find even better movies and will update this if necessary. 3 movies are not real westerns. 2 kids-only westerns.

I haven’t included Gunsmoke (rating 9 on my overalls blog) as I don’t have an entry here yet and so I forgot this.

I’m quite busy these days so please prepare for fewer entries. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone!

The Magnificent Seven (1960)

magnificentsevenmagnificentseven2

Western starring Yul Brynner
-Year: 1960
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: boys ~11
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating: 3/10 ?
-Rating: ***
-Comment: At least 3 Mexican boys and maybe some more supporting actors in the village wearing different Mexican clothes including straw hats.

So back to real westerns. I think I have seen it, but can’t remember all of it. I also like Yul Brynner (especially in Westworld).

Famous movie by John Sturges, nominated for 1 Oscar; 3 sequels. Also starring Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn and many others including Victor French and Host Buchholz.

Probably a very good western, but for the kid actors I only can give rating (2-)3 for now. I will recheck it the next broadcasting.

128 minutes, 2.35:1 Panavision.

Dallas (1978)

dallas-s14dallas-s14b

Ranch TV series
-Year: 1978-1991
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: John Ross ~14, Christopher 11-12
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: S13,14
-Clothing occurence: low
-Rating: 9/10
-Rating: *********
-Comment: Omri Katz as John Ross (in both pics on the left) and film cousin Joshua Harris sometimes in tight jeans and cowboy hats. Also riding (but few scenes). Probably also young women in cowboy hats and maybe more actors. 2 brief scenes of Omri in different bib overalls (not riding), see my overalls blog, rating 7. Also on my bedroom blog, rating 4. They aren’t show very often and they also wear suits, suit pants and ties. Omri also light blue and white jeans.

How could I forget this famous ranch series? I even own 2 DVD sets. The German DVDs obviously don’t fulfill the DVD standards and some parts (around 1 hour) can’t be played on none of my players nor my PCs.

Both pics are from the final season 14. Also both shirtless in perfect swim shorts (Omri in light purple ones). 2 brief riding scenes of Omri. Joshua Harris a bit more often, also in season 13 (and maybe other seasons as well). Of course they are younger in earlier seasons. Maybe there are also other good scenes of interest with other actors in the 70s or 80s. But most likely very few scenes of younger actors.

I like Omri Katz, so rating 9. But I think I have to focus more on real western movies.

Update: Ronnie Scribner in s3e4, rating 7

Montana Sky

montanasky2007

Ranch romance
-Year: 2007
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Willa ~28
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: often ?
-Rating: 2/10 ?
-Rating: **
-Comment: Ashley Williams as youngest of 3 daughters wearing a white cowboy hat and jeans. Blue checkered shirt, later also a pink shirt. Diane Ladd with a brown cowboy hat. I don’t know of any kids acting.

I don’t know / don’t remember this complete movie.

Obviously not a real western but a typical ranch romance. Bestselling novel by Nora Roberts.

I will recheck it the next broadcasting. Nice actress with long dark blond hair. But I prefer younger and male actors.

So rating 2 for now.

Tall Tale (1995)

talltale

Disney fantasy adventure starring Patrick Swayze
-Year: 1995
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Daniel ~15
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no, partly TV recording
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating: 2/10 ?
-Rating: **
-Comment: Nick Stahl in a light blue shirt and beige pants with suspenders, a hat and a dark brown coat. Also riding but not alone. And at least a black man shirtless in blue jeans bib overalls. Catherine O’Hara wears a cowboy hat and a sheriff star (Sorry, no pic of her, I’ve seen it too late).

I’m sure that I have seen this Pecos Bill movie completely several years ago and was very disappointed. I liked Nick Stahl in “The Man Without a Face (1993)” but he looks much older here (on most scenes except for some good close-up headshots).

Probably one of the worst Disney westerns. Set in 1905 but with western town and setting. There are few real Disney westerns and most of the other remaining movies don’t even have younger actors at all.

No need to tell much more about this boring movie. I don’t remember it anyway. Aka “Tall Tale: The Unbelievable Adventures of Pecos Bill”.

Rating 2-3.

The Ransom of Red Chief (1998)

ransomofredchief2

Western starring Haley Joel Osment
-Year: 1998
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Andy 9
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: often ?
-Rating: 4/10 ?
-Rating: ****
-Comment: 9 or 10 yo Haley Joel Osment (but even much younger looking) in a blue white striped shirt, a brown vest and light brown pants. Also with a black hat.

Maybe I have already seen this Hallmark comedy film but can’t remember. I like Haley although he’s very young here.

I prefer serious westerns (and jeans or overalls).

Please also check my recent post on my overalls blog about a home movie with this title and also “O. Henry’s Full House” with boys in overalls.

There are also other movies with the same title. Needs to be checked as well.

Rating 4 for this one.

Night Passage

nightpassage1957

Western starring James Stewart
-Year: 1957
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Joey ~16
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating: 5/10 ?
-Rating: *****
-Comment: I think blond Brandon De Wilde (*1942-1972) in mainly beige clothes (beige blue patched jacket), blue scarf and a beige hat. Also riding.

Not bad, but looks like a typical western. 2.35:1 Technicolor.

I also don’t like Brandon De Wilde (Shane (1953), rating 1). At least now older and much more handsome and riding.

Rating 5 for now. I have to recheck it the next broadcasting.

Rachel and the Stranger

rachelandthestranger2

Western starring Robert Mitchum
-Year: 1948
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Davey ~11
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: b&w *
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium
-Rating: 6/10
-Rating: ******
-Comment: Around 11 yo Gary Gray as 9 yo Davey in a light blue shirt, beige pants and black hat, also a fur hat. Also a shirtless scene (swimming in a river in black underwear).

The movie is in b&w (same as on most DVDs). But there are some colorized versions (and DVD releases, like the Italian) as well. So watch out before buying!

Blond Gary Gray is very handsome and I give a rating of at least 6-7. There seems to be some good scenes. But I have to check more of it (especially the colorized version).

Early 1820s setting.

I almost considered buying it and rating 7 or higher but I checked it completety on YouTube. Rather few good scenes and he’s very small. And not a real western to me.
