Gunfighters (1947)

Zane Grey Western, PD
Year: 1947
Country: USA
Who in clothing: boy ~8 ?, woman
What clothes: pants, hat
Available on DVD: yes
B&W or color: color
I own: no
Clothing occurence: very low
Rating: 3/10
Rating: ***
Comment: At least this uncredited boy in blue or grey pants (no suspenders) also at least a lady with a white Cowboy hat, Barbara Britton and I think Dorothy Hart as well.

I found this some time ago but don’t remember much. I assume very few good scenes.

Rating 3-4 only. Needs to be rechecked more carefully.

Song of Arizona

Western starring Roy Rogers
-Year: 1946
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: boys ~8-16 ?
-Available on DVD: yes
B&W or color: b&w
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: often ?
-Rating: 6/10
-Rating: ******
-Comment: Another interesting movie, starring Tommy Ivo and also several other (at least 13) boys and teen boys, including 15 yo Tommy Cook, 11 yo Johnny Calkins, 9 yo Teddy Infuhr, The Robert Mitchell Boy Choir (as Ranch boys) and others. Also at least 1 woman wearing a Cowboy hat.

Nice ranch and riding scenes and also showing chaps. Most boys wearing jeans, chaps and hats.

Rating at least 6-7. But I only have checked it briefly. Unfortunatley the movie is in b&w.

There are different DVDs available, I can’t say about each image quality. At least some are DVDr. PD Movie. 68 minutes and 54 minutes cut. So watch out.

My Friend Flicka (1943)

Family/Western film. Roddy McDowall
-Year: 1943
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Ken ~14
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no, partly TV recording
-Clothing occurence: often
-Rating: 7/10 ?
-Rating: *******
-Comment: Roddy McDowall in faded jeans, sometimes also riding (at 20 minutes) and with a white Cowboy hat. Some nice sitting scenes. There are also some scene of a very young girl (but not of interest).

Thanks very much Jody, for his comment and photo album (where pic 1 is from).

Nice movie and handsome actor, but somehow I don’t like him that much. It’s also not a real Western and no typical Western clothes except for the hat (which I didn’t remember and so haven’t made a post earlier). Luckily already in color.

Rating 6-7 only. I have to recheck the complete movie at slow speed.

A Christmas Story (1983)

Famous family Christmas movie
-Year: 1983
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Ralphie ~12
-Available on DVD: yes
B&W or color: color
-I own: no, partly TV recording
-Clothing occurence: very low
-Rating: 4/10 ?
-Rating: ****
-Comment: ~12 yo Peter Billingsley as 9 yo main character Ralphie in white Western clothes including hat and scarf and cow chaps in a short dream scene. Also his younger brother in rare bib overalls (other blog rating 3). Set in the 1940s.

By updating my entry on my other blog, I found this scene by coincidence.

Great and funny movie, although I don’t like this 2 boys. Some great scenes like a tongue stuck at a frozen pole. (Some more movies with this on my sailor suit blog). Another movie with this family after the 1966 novel by Jean Shepherd is Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss (rating 5).

Interesting clothes, but for this brief scene rating 4 only.

Return of the Bad Men

Western starring Randolph Scott
-Year: 1948
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Johnny ~11, woman
-Available on DVD: yes
B&W or color: b&w
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating: 6/10 ?
-Rating: ******
-Comment: Gary Gray in tight, dark, striped pants, I think not jeans, a vest and a flat hat. Also a woman with a Cowboy hat, also riding.

I didn’t had the time to check the complete movie. But it looks interesting.

Pic 2 at the beginning, pic 1 shortly later. Obviously several good scenes of Gary.

Warner Archive DVD, so probably a DVDr. I think, I won’t buy it.

Rating at least 6-7 for now.

Hellfire (1949)

Western starring Bill Elliott
-Year: 1949
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Doll ~29
-Available on DVD: yes
B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating: 3/10 ?
-Rating: ***
-Comment: I think this must be Marie Windsor as fugitive Doll Brown in a vest, Cowboy hat and green scarf.

I have checked this some time ago and can’t say much more yet. 90 minutes Trucolor.

Obviously a typical Western for it’s time. I don’t remember younger actors in here.

So rating 2-3 for now only.

Calamity Jane and Sam Bass

-Year: 1949
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing:  Calamity ~26
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: medium ?
-Rating: 2/10 ?
-Rating: **
-Comment: Canadian Yvonne De Carlo as Calamity Jane in medium brown clothes with beige fringes, medium brown leather pants and a white hat. Also riding.

From time to time I also post strong women.

I currently only had a movie with a 10 yo Calamity Jane

I can’t say much more. As I prefer boys, rating 2-3 only.

Virginia City

Adventure film starring Errol Flynn
-Year: 1940
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Cobby ~12, woman
-What clothes: shirt, pants, hats
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: b&w
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low
-Rating: 5/10
-Rating: *****
-Comment: Dickie Jones in dark pants with a rope or similar belt. Hands in pockets, he also had to lift up his pants (then hands not in pockets). And wearing a hat. There’s also a woman with a cowboy hat (probably Miriam Hopkins), also riding. Also starring Humphrey Bogart.

Quite interesting, good scenes and handsome actor. But I think rather few good scenes (like at 36 minutes and 1h10).

So rating 5-6 for now only. Completely on

Updates: The Kentuckian , Red River (1948)

I have recently seen some major parts of these two movies.

All pics showing The Kentuckian (1955 starring Burt Lancaster), previously rated 3, now 5. Quite good western but I don’t like Donald MacDonald (pic 2). One better, more handsome boy is Lee Erickson at the fighting scene (pic 1). Also many kids (boys+girls) outside the school. Some boys appear like wearing overalls but they are only pants with suspenders.

I also have seen Red River (1948) starring John Wayne and teen boy Mickey Kuhn. I have uploaded a pic of a colorized version. Good plot, but I don’t like this boy.

The Lone Rider Rides On

Western starring George Houston
-Year: 1941
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Jim ~11, Tom ~13
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: b&w
-I own: yes
-Clothing occurence: low
-Rating: 3/10
-Rating: ***
-Comment: Harry Harvey Jr. and Robert aky Bobby Winkler (as young Lone Rider)  in dark jeans, western shirts and hats.

Some westerns have/will be aired today and tommorow on German RTL Nitro. 1 was quite good. But first this one.

After my entry King of the Sierras (1938) rating 5, I searched for more movies starring Harry Harvey Jr.. I found one very good pic with him and the other boy and as I haven’t found it online I just bought it.

A typical, poor 1940s-1hour-b&w movie. Only some few minutes at the beginning of the movie. They are fighting and rolling on the ground. One boy singing. Not even a close up of the face of the other one. The rest is set around 20 years later when they are grown-up.

And very poor image and sound quality (at least the edition from Alpha Video / DVD title Riders of the Plains. Probably PD. Also starring Al St. John as Fuzzy. At least 2 handsome boys in jeans. DVD is pressed and not a DVDr like many others from them. Plot is quite good.

So rating 2-3 only.

Happy Easter!
