Smoke (1970)

Disney film. Ron Howard
-Year: 1970
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Chris 14
-Available on DVD: VHS only
B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating: 5/10 ?
-Rating: *****
-Comment: ~15 yo Ronny Howard as 14 yo Chris wearing a black Cowboy hat, jeans and a beige shirt.

I don’t know/ don’t remember the complete movie. Obviously few Western scenes.

A typical boy/dog Disney movie of it’s time.

Rating 5 for now only.

Bonanza – s14e3

Western series starring Lorne Greene
-Year: 1959-1973
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: teen boys ~14-18
-Available on DVD: yes
B&W or color: color
-I own: no, partly TV recording
-Clothing occurence: often
-Rating: 7/10
-Rating: *******
-Comment: Next to Mitch Vogel, there are several other (famous) teen boys acting in this 1972 episode “The Initiation”. Ron Howard (pic 3 on left), Nicolas Beauvy (pic 2), James Van Patten (pic 4 on right ?), Alfred Barker Jr. and Sean Kelly (both also in “The Cowboys 1972” like Nicolas Beauvy), Jeff Smart (“Bless the Beasts & Children”) and some more.

Several scenes of them. Many wearing vests and hats.

I recently find this by searching for Hog Wild (1974) starring Nicolas Beauvy in wet bib overalls (other blog rating 7, still missing pics).

Very interesting, but some are quite old.

Rating 6-7. Main entry, previously rating up to 5

Menace on the Mountain

TV movie Jodie Foster. Disney-Land s16e18
-Year: 1970
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Mark 9, Jamie 14
-Available on DVD: yes
B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: often ?
-Rating: 6/10 ?
-Rating: ******
-Comment: 9 or 10 yo Eric Shea, redhaired 14 yo Mitch Vogel (“Bonanza”) and 7 or 8 yo Jodie Foster starring in this interesting looking Disney TV movie.

I haven’t seen it yet. Typical clothes of that time, pants with suspenders and hats. Also pajamas. I don’t like Mitch Vogel. Eric Shea I like more. He also starred in Gunsmoke, LHOTP and some other movies, I partly have on my other blogs (bib overalls and sailor suits).

Rating 6-7 for now. Probably there are better (Disney) movies.

Western series James Stacy, 51 ep
-Year: 1968-1970
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Andy ~14, Willie 15, Willy 14, boys, girls
-Available on DVD: no *
B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low+ ?
-Rating: 7/10 ?
-Rating: *******
-Comment: At least 14 or 15 yo Bill Mumy as Andy (pic 1) in a light blue shirt, beige pants with a belt and a grey Cowboy hat. Pic from s2e3 The Kid. Also Clint Howard as Willie in light blue bib overalls in s2e14 (pic 4, soon also on my overalls blog). Very interesting episode is s1e25 with many kids (mostly uncredited on IMDb) in and outside a school (including girls) and ~14 yo Ron Howard (pic 3 standing in light blue jeans) and also a young blonde boy in pants with suspenders.

Lots of guest stars including Victor French, Jonathan Harris and many more. As younger kid also Johnny Whitaker (“Tom Sawyer 1973”). But I don’t know all episodes.

I found this by coincidence. Rating 7 for now. Needs to be rechecked. Partly on YouTube but in a bad quality. There is or was a DVD set, maybe inofficial DVDr?

Update: Big City (2007)

I now have seen the complete DVD. It’s a good and usual western, some handsome boys and some good scenes. But the rating is still 6-7. No jeans (except for few overalls scenes), no chaps, few riding scenes etc.

Most kids playing the characters of grown ups (bartender, piano player, female teacher, slaves) so wearing “grown-ups clothes” smoking cigars and having guns. Other kids playing kids (pupils). Few grown-ups.

Also kids as Indians (but rather few scenes in the 2nd half) and one Chinese. 3 young boys in sailor suits. Best is of course the red haired and freckled main character (and his bathtub scene in long johns). More infos (soon) on my other blogs.

Main entry

Big City (2007)

-Who in clothing: boys, girls ~7-12
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color

-Rating: *******
-Comment: Several boys and girls in western clothes (including riding), also some boys in bib overalls (overalls blog rating 4) and 3 boys in sailor suits (rating 3) and the handsome boy bathing in a union suit.

Kids taking over the parts of grown-ups, but there are also grown-ups here. Most kids-only westerns are not available on DVD.

An interesting and funny movie. Soon more (on all my blogs).

Rating 6-7. Update and 2 more pics on

“Home on the Range” is the title of the VHS as well as this song. Also other, similar (pioneer) clothes including bib overalls (soon on my overalls blog, rating 5).

Have Gun – Will Travel

Western series starring Richard Boone
-Year: 1957-1963
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing: Morse ~13, kids
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: no
-Clothing occurence: low ?
-Rating: 3/10 ?
-Rating: ***
-Comment: At least this boy, I think it’s Jimmy Baird wearing a dark jacket and a hat outside. Also some young boys and girls including a blond boy in pants with suspenders in a one-room schoolhouse in s1e27 (1958). Also at least one young blond woman riding with a cowboy hat in a different episode.

Sorry, I’m currently very busy and I found it during research for my overalls blog (one-room schoolhouse).

I don’t know the other episodes.

Many famous guest stars from Charles Bronson to Vincent Price. Also some more boys like 12 yo Bill Mumy but I have to check more episodes.

Rating 3-4 for now only.

Lost in Space (1965)

Sci-Fi series starring Bill Mumy
-Year: 1965-1968
-Country: USA
-Who in clothing:  Will ~12
-Available on DVD: yes
-B&W or color: color
-I own: yes
-Clothing occurence: very low
-Rating: 5/10 *
-Rating: *****
-Comment: Billy Mumy with a grey cowboy hat and a beige jacket in the final episode of season 2 (s2e30).

He is still wearing his orange space pants. He is playing a director for a stage play his younger sister and Dr. Smith do. (The others not in real cowboy clothes).

I like this series especially the silver space coveralls (season 1 is in b&w). But it’s also funny and timeless.

He also starred in the western series “The Virginian” aka The Men From Shiloh” I posted yesterday by coincidence. I will search for him soon.

Unfortunately only a short scenes with him here in that cowboy outfit at the beginning of this episode.

So rating 4-5 only.
